A Day of Family Fun
Ben and Elly Shaw both grew up in Knoxville and returned to their hometown in 2013. They now live in Knoxville with their 8-year old daughter, 5-year old son and three dogs. Elly works in healthcare quality & compliance at Knoxville Hospital and Clinics and Ben runs Kone Korner, which the family bought from Elly’s parents in 2017. Although there’s lots to love about their hometown, the Shaw’s most enjoy living close to family in a safe community where the kids can play outside and attend great schools.
When it comes to fun family activities to do around Knoxville, the Shaw’s are experts. Take a look at their itinerary for a day of fun the whole family will be sure to enjoy.
If you had an entire day free in Knoxville, how would you spend it?
To start the day, make a stop at The Coffee Connection to get a cup of coffee for the adults and hot chocolate for the kids. Once everyone has their drinks, swing by the Knoxville Public Library to pick up some books.
Even though the Shaw’s own Kone Korner, they love it and highly recommend as your lunchtime destination. The kids like to get cheeseballs and beefburgers, plus they always get ice cream. Elly recommends the chicken pit and pickle fries. If Kone Korner is open, Ben is probably busy cooking away!
The first stop of the afternoon is one of Knoxville’s parks – the kids love Young’s Park and the Skate Park. For younger kids, the Skate Park is fun on scooters, but make sure to stay away from the bowl! After visiting the park, head over to Lake Red Rock. The Shaw’s love to explore at the lake and recommend finding trails to hike or a campground playground for the kids.
If the you’re wanting to stay in town, the Shaw’s suggest hopping on the trail by Knoxville Hospital & Clinic and walking to the Bessie Spaur Butterfly and around the Knoxville Rec Center/High School area.
The Shaw’s love Pizza Friday, so for dinner they recommend ordering carryout from either Fast Freddy’s or Corigliano’s. If you aren’t in the mood for pizza, head over to Fareway to grab some meat for grilling out.
After dinner, head to the Grand Theater to catch a show, a favorite family activity for the Shaw’s. If it’s a race night at Knoxville Raceway, gather up the kids and head to the track for a fun night of racing. For an adult night out, grab a drink at A&P Pub.
